After 16 years in the national league, 2023-2024 could be the last season for Canberra United FC.

After the national women’s team, The Matildas, delighted us all with their success at the Women’s World Cup, the “Matilda Effect” has fueled record-breaking memberships and big crowds attending Canberra United games. Despite this, due to a range of factors, including rising costs of running a professional team, relatively low levels of ACT Government Funding, and Canberra United being the only team in the A-League to be managed by our member Federation (Capital Football) we are struggling to provide financial security for players and coaches.

Capital Football, as a Member Federation, have to run both grassroots football in Canberra as well as try and manage our professional team. Unfortunately, they do not currently have the money and resources to run both elements sustainably. This is why we are asking you to help support us to provide the necessary funds, and to keep our Canberra United team alive and part of our community. We not only want to be in the competition, we want to have the necessary funds to once again be competitive and be part of finals action.

Please help save our team! Our beloved Canberra United has been the home for so many wonderful Matildas like Michelle Heyman, Hayley Raso, Lydia Williams, Ash Sykes, Ellie Carpenter and Clare Hunt. Canberra United provides a valuable pathway for girls and women to play top-level football, and they are important role models for aspiring players. They can be who they see.

We have come to embrace Canberra United and we have shown, over 16 seasons, that we are with them all the way. We are members and fans whose dedication to our team is a testament to Canberra United’s success, it’s strength, and above all the team’s solid and abiding connection to our community. We believe that Canberra United deserves our support and investment.

Our players and coaching staff are understandably worried that they won’t have a job at Canberra United if the funding issue isn’t secured. Players will be looking to sign with other clubs if United doesn’t get certainty soon about the 2024/25 season.  We will be asking our local ACT Government to also increase its funding of our team to help boost our financial future.

We have formed a working group (Save Canberra United) to inform the community about the possibility of losing Canberra United, so that we can save our team. Our fundraising goals are ambitious, but we believe that the passion, the dedication and the goodwill of Canberra football supporters can help save our team and ensure that they are funded in 2024-2025 and beyond.

All donations will go directly to supporting Canberra United and elite women’s football – this means that your donation will go to cover coaching and support staff, training facilities, uniforms, performance support, accommodation, meals and nutrition, transport, and other wraparound support – all necessary parts of a successful professional team and which contribute to our players being the best they can be. And, we get to keep Canberra United connected to their community – us, their fans and supporters.
